Mr. Wilkey was born in 1933 on a farm in Mills County, Texas. The homestead is still in the
Wilkey family, and owned by Varnell. He is married to a great lady, ( also a volunteer driver
aiding veterans).
The Wilky's have one son, one granddaughter, and two great grandsons.
He graduated from Star High School in 1949. Varnell Wilkey worked hard as an laborer until he was
drafted into the Army in 1953. Fort Bliss, in El Paso Texas was where he did his basic training.
He proceeded to the Atlanta General Depot at Atlanta Georgia for advanced training and was then
deployed in 1954 to Korea, where he was stationed until his discharge.
When Varnell Wilkey retured to the States and left the Military, he went to Odessa Texas.
Mr. Wilkey retired after working in a gas plant 42 years. After his retirement, he brought his
family home to Mills County.
Former Mills County Judge Rob Lindsey appointed Varnell Wilkey in 2005. He enjoys the job and feels
great about his work for veterans. He is not shy about getting help to aide the veterans and always
thanks all those who pitch in to assist him.
Mills County is a rural area, surrounded by rural areas. It is over a two hour drive to the Veterans
Hospital that serves this area of Texas. Mr. Wilkey and his spouse assist many, many veterans. Driving
them to the Veterans Clinics or hospitals, funerals or where ever there is a need. He does not restrict
his help to Mills County but manages to assist those Veterans in the surrounding counties, he does so at
his own expense, using his time, energy, vehicle and gasoline.
His health has been a problem and required surgery, yet when a funeral procession bringing home one of
our fallen Iraq soldiers passes through our county, Mr. Wilkey is there at roadside, having the boy scouts
hand out flags and making sure all the veterans that can travel in this rural area are present to salute
goodbye in Honor of the fallen hero, someone's child, a loved one, an American Military Soldier,
and one of our own!
